New championship leader stuns in the UK

FIM Supersport World Championship rookie Sandro Cortese (Kallio Racing) put in a stunning performance this weekend in the Prosecco DOC UK Round, bouncing back from a testing Superpole on Saturday.

It’s been nine years since Cortese has raced around Donington Park, and the German clearly hasn’t lost his touch around the 4.023km track. Frustrated with his pace in Superpole – despite qualifying on the front row – Cortese was able to make some changes to his YZF-R6 in order to ensure he was competitive for the race.

Getting a steady start, the opening laps welcomed some challenges and stunning battles but it was clear Cortese was keen to lead the pack in order to prevent his rivals from breaking away. Swapping paint with Jules Cluzel (NRT), Cortese pulled out a small gap and led the pack to the line, taking his second victory of 2018.

Explaining his plan for the 20 lap race: “It’s amazing after a hard weekend, as the wind created so many problems. We worked so hard after qualifying where we made some mistakes, because of the wind we had to change something to be fast in the race. We made the right step, and a big thanks to the team because we worked really hard and I’m very happy to take my second race win.”
